Eleazer Reflects on his Undergraduate Experience
My four years in the Ashinaga Africa Initiative program have been undoubtedly an unmatched experience. When I first arrived in Uganda for prep camp, I didn’t really know what to expect, but the entire experience blew my mind. I met a lot of amazing people who have contributed to my access as a person and a future African leader.
Reflecting on my college experience with Ashinaga, I can only be thankful. I’m thankful for Ashinaga’s vision, support and follow through. The challenges I faced in college were beyond academic strain. Some were social, physical, financial and mental. There were times where I genuinely wanted to give up because that was just easier. There were countless times when I studied long hours, but the hard work didn’t seem to translate in my results. Despite all of these things, I persevered. Ashinaga was an enormous support system for me, from Tsudoi meetings and representatives that were there to listen and support. Not to mention my other AAI friends I could call to discuss some of my challenges and just vent to.
I put in a lot of hard work and made sure to enjoy the process. During my time at Richmond, I captained an intramural soccer team that won the senior championship, and I started a ping-pong club. I was also a Resident Assistant and a tutor for junior-level Computer Science classes. I studied, socialized and had a good time.
Above all, Ashinaga’s promise to grant me a world class education has been fulfilled. I couldn’t be more prepared for the challenges I’ll have to face after college. I’m beyond thankful for this opportunity and investment and I look forward to all the great things ahead of me.
